So you go middle with a bottle ERRR bad idea buddy. I’d argue madman bottle first (almost exclusive rune control due to the MS boost) and that’s pretty much it. Reasons why bottle sucks? You can go bottle, but your early game spam is easily negated by the other guy getting tangos (the tree eaters) or a potion. They’ll also out last hit you with their stat items and can easily farm a bottle faster. If they have a chicken and you don’t… Y.O.U.R.E.F.U.C.K.E.D so get 3 or 4 minor totems, regen and a chicken for yourself (but first try to weasel the 200 gold out of someone else).

So, now that you know you’re bad for going bottle first, here is what you should ALWAYS be doing as solo:

1). Every 2 minutes, check the rune or ask a teammate too. Ganking with runes is very important early game. How important? there is an entire meta-game (game within a game) devoted to rune controlling with wards and having teams rune sit (1 or more people sitting runes to make sure their team gets it). In low level games, rune control is easy. In higher level games, this becomes HUGE.

2). If you’re a melee versus a range, consider stout shield and upgrade it so you’ll always take 20 less damage. This adds up to some SERIOUS damage negation.

3). Call your lane missing and where he or she is headed. Ping and tell them that there is a hero going somewhere and they possibly have a rune. Having your team run back and avoiding a gank costs their solo exp and farming time. You’ll easily make up for this by farming middle a bit.

4). Not every solo lane is about killing the other person. For example, picking Keeper of the Forest means get regen and an axe then rape every creep. You’re not killing anyone middle with Keeper of the Forest, but you can leverage your base damage to outfarm them.

5).  Tell those gutter rat newbs that sneak their way into middle after you leave to gank to get the fuck out. Appropriately inform them they’re trash and to leave. My tactics include threatening them with game tossing or not helping them. If they argue more, let them die at some point in the game to prove a point.

6). If you are against a good Puppet Master or Blood Hunter, inform your team middle is lost before getting there. HoN is terribly unbalanced in this respect.
