HoN Tundra Hero Guide

Tundra

Tundra is a new melee Strength hero in Heroes of Newerth Patch 1.0.3 based on the Rexxar the Beastmaster from Dota.  A great jungler, ganker, map-controller, and late game brawler, Tundra is a welcome addition to HoN.  Let’s take a look at his abilities:

Piercing Shards (q)

Piercing Shards sends out two arcs of ice shards towards a point that return to Tundra after converging on that point, dealing magic and physical damage to anything they hit and destroying trees in their path.  Units can be damaged by the shards on the initial journey and on the return trip.

Piercing Shards is a good long-range nuke for lane control and picking off heroes that are trying to escape.

Call of Winter (w)

Call of Winter summons Shiver and Coeurl, a land and an air creature to aid Tundra.  Shiver is a bird that cannot attack but is used for scouting.  This is great to find your opponents in the jungle or to check for runes.  Shiver even has a windwalk ability at Level 3 that allows you to scout undetected.

Coeurl is a ranged, attacking summon that puts a slowing effect on units it hits.  This slow helps Tundra get a lot more damage in as it prevents enemy heroes from escaping while he is attacking them and gaining attack speed through his Coldblooded passive ability.  Good micro and positioning of this unit is essential for getting kills with Tundra.  Coeurl also has the Coldblooded passive and gains attack speed with every consecutive attack on a target.

Coldblooded (passive)

Coldblooded passively boosts Tundra’s attack speed with each additional attack onto the same target.  If Tundra changes targets, half the attack speed gain is lost.

This ability is well-complemented by Coeurl’s or any other slow that can allow Tundra to rapidly unload damage onto a target.  This type of skill is also great for taking on Kongor with some form of lifesteal since the long term battle against one target will have Tundra attacking very quickly.

Avalanche (r)

Avalanche stuns and damages a target unit while also damaging and pushing units between Tundra and the target out of the way.  This is one of the ultimate ganking spells in HoN and almost always ensures a good pick off kill.

Early Game

Recommended Early Game items:

+

Marchers + Bottle

Early game you should at least partially jungle/creep pull, control runes with your bird, and gank asap at Level 6 with your ultimate, or before that with your Coeurl slow and Piercing Shards nuke.  Gank every time your ultimate is ready.

Mid Game

Recommended Mid Game items:

For jungling/carrying:

+ +

Runed Axe + Abyssal Skull + Steamboots

Runed Axe and Abyssal Skull are staple jungling items to get you clearing neutral creeps very quickly and get farmed up.  With items like these you can also kill Kongor by yourself with a maxed out Coldblooded passive for high attack speed.

OR

For pure ganking:

+ +

Ghost Marchers + Portal Key + Puzzlebox

Ghost Marchers or Portal Key give Tundra the speed or versatility to catch enemy heroes in bad positions and pick them off.  Puzzebox puts out massive damage to units that are already slowed from Coeurl by getting in lots of mana-burning attacks.

Late Game

Recommended Late Game items:

+

Frostburn + Daemonic Breastplate

Late game get beastly and do work.  Shrunken Head, Behemoths Heart, and Barbed Armor can also be good choices depending on the circumstances.  If you don’t have some form of lifesteal yet, you need it!  In extreme cases you can try to shut down a farmed carry on the other team by using a Brutalizer with your high attack speed from Coldblooded to perma-stun them.
