Spells

Stalagmites
Pebbles summons forth an eruption of stalagmites at a target location, stunning and damaging all enemies in the area.
Activation
Deals 100 / 180 / 260 / 300 Magic damage and stuns each target in radius for 2 seconds.
Units affected by Chuck take double the damage.
Type – Magic
Range – 600
Radius – 200
Mana Cost – 120
Cooldown – 20 seconds
Video to come
A great AoE stun, once Pebbles grabs a portal key make sure you cast Chuck before Stalagmites so that the target will take double damage. Can also be used to destroy trees and juke around when running.
===================================================================================================

Chuck
Pebbles throws a nearby visible unit to target location, damaging it and all enemies in an area around where it lands.
Activation
Deals 75 / 150 / 225 / 300 Magic damage to enemy units in radius. Buildings receive 33% damage. Deals 15 / 30 / 45 / 60 Magic damage to thrown unit.
Type – Magic
Range – 500/700/900/1100
Radius – 300
Mana Cost – 120
Cooldown – 10 seconds
Video to come
A fun spell that can be used in many ways. You can toss an enemy or ally so it has its offenses and defensive uses, you can chuck in allies like Legionnaire or Behemoth who can then use their spells effectively without portal keys or you can chuck enemies into your team to effectively remove them from team fight.
===================================================================================================

Slab Skin
Grants bonus armor and reduces the duration of debuffs.
-10 / -20 / -30 / -40% Debuff Durations
2 / 4 / 6 / 8 Armor
Passive Ability
Kind of a useless ability unless you can get farmed enough to not need the attribute bonus instead of this skill
===================================================================================================

Grow
Makes Pebbles grow larger, increasing attack damage, move speed, adding to the power of his other skills, yet greatly slowing his attack speed.
+40 / 80 / 120 Base Damage
Increases cast range by {50,100,150}.
Increases bonus damage dealt to chucked unit from 20% to {35,50,65}% of the AoE damage.
Passive Ability
Great ability to get after maxing chuck & stalagmites especially later game when the -attack speed is countered by items.

Item Recommendations

Blood Chalice is a great item, use it right before you kill a hero and basically it’s free mana, a great pickup early on.

Portal Key is a core item on Pebbles, it allows him to blink right next to enemies to combo down enemies effectively.

Frostfield Plate is a great item, adds the AoE damage that Pebbs has with it’s activatable, gives him an upgraded mana pool with the +int and +armor to his abysmally small armor base.

Deamonic Breastplate basically fits most of Pebbles needs, gives him attack speed to counter his ultimate, armor for his already low pool base and lowers the armor of enemies increasing your damage even more, a great late item pick-up.
===================================================================================================
Early Game
Early game if you are solo focus on grabbing levels and if you can capitalize on your opponents mistake. If you are in a side lane again, focus on playing aggressively with your lane partner, pick up a blood chalice early and if you really want to a bottle as well, whether you get striders or ghost marchers is up to you however you should look to get a portal as soon as you can after boots/bottle/blood chalice. After you pickup your portal key look to shutdown the other teams carry or focus on heroes that will fall easily to your combo.
Middle Game
By now you should be purely ganking with or without your portal key, again focus on other carry heroes or heroes you can take down with your combo, they key to middle game is vision so counter warding and warding is always good, 200 gold is negligible for pebbles considering how many kills he should be obtaining. The only farm you should be doing is gank-farming otherwise you will be getting a lot of experience and gold farming off the enemy heroes, again movement and vision is the key to Pebbles mid game.
Late Game
By late game most heroes will be able to survive your combination except for support heroes who’ve wisely spent their gold on courier/wards etc. like Andromeda, Witch Slayer etc. So again focus on them or the carry hero, you should be by no means farming, grab another 2 heroes and go around picking off heroes with them, you can easily take out towers that are left with Chuck since it does a decent amount of damage. If you can blink into the other team and toss a vital hero to your team whether the be a carry or huge disable like tempest, magmus etc. and get out it will be vital to victory.
HoN Accursed Hero Guide
![]()
Accursed
Starting Attributes:
Str – 23 + 2.7 per lvl (primary attribute)
Agi – 17 + 1.5 per lvl
21 + 2.0 per lvl
Range – Melee
Damage – 54-56
Armor – 4.38
Movement Speed – 300
===================================================================================================
Spells

Cauterize
At the cost of some of his own Health, Accursed bursts the air around a target, dealing damage to them if they are an enemy or healing them if they are an ally.
Activation
Deals 100 / 150 / 200 / 250 Magic damage to enemy units or heals allied units for 100 / 150 / 200 / 250 Health. Deals 50 / 75 / 100 / 125 Magic damage to self.
Type – Magic
Range – 700
Mana Cost – 75
Cooldown – 6 seconds
A great spell, can be used offensively to nuke a hero down or defensively to heal an ally or deny yourself and the opposition a kill.
===================================================================================================

Fire Shield
Accursed covers a friendly unit in a shield of flames protecting them from damage and removing harmful effects. If the shield is damaged to its breaking point, it will explode, dealing Magical damage to nearby enemies equal to that of the damage absorbed.
Removes most debuffs and stuns, then applies Fire Shield to target for 15 seconds.
Fire Shield Effects
110 / 140 / 170 / 200 damage shield. Once full amount is absorbed, damages enemies in 700 radius for 110 / 140 / 170 / 200 Magic damage.
Type – Magic
Range – 350
Mana Cost – 100/110/120/130
Cooldown – 18/15/12/9 seconds
One of the best early laning phase spells and babysit spells, basically nullifys a certain amount of damage and if the damage threshold is broken explodes the shield & damages units around it.
===================================================================================================

Sear
Causes Accursed’s attacks to sear his target, slowing their movement speed. Any ally that attacks the affected unit will be buffed with increased attack speed and movement speed.
Applies Sear to target for 2 seconds.
5 / 10 / 15 / 20% Movement Slow
When attacked, applies Burning Strikes to attacker for 4.5 seconds.
Burning Strikes Effects
10 / 20 / 30 / 40 Attack Speed
10% Movement Speed
Passive Ability
Ever since becoming an attack modifier it isn’t that great of an ability, to be honest I’d get attribute bonuses before this spell until late game since the % movement slow is negligible.
===================================================================================================

Flame Consumption
Accursed summons a powerful fire tornado around himself which, when fueled with damage, causes him to regain his life.
Removes debuffs and applies Protective Flames to self for 3 / 4 / 5 seconds.
Protective Flames Effects
100% of damage taken converted to Health
Cooldown – 60 seconds
Great spell once you learn when to use it or late game when all shit is going crazy and you just press R

Item Recommendations

Astrolabe is an additional heal for Accursed making him that much of a better support hero, Cauterize/Shield/Astrolabe is about 500 damage healed, yeah.

Nomes Wisdom is a great addition, gives that much needed Mana Aura & the abilities that come with it compliment Accursed in general as well as the team.

Barrier Idol again adds to the healing/damage nullification that Accursed has for his team as well as himself, obviously dependent on how nuke-heavy the other team but there are few heroes which make this item worth it alone (Thunderbringer, Pyromancer etc.)

Again adding to Accursed annoying capabilities to live through fights, this should be looked to picked up after quite a few support items.
===================================================================================================
Early Game
Early game you are probably going to be babysitting a carry/semi carry hero, make sure to shield/heal them whenever the opposition tries to advance on them or use your nuke NOT to last hit but harass the enemies back, a good early game item is Blood Chalice. You should focus on letting your carry get last hits and forcing your creep wave to static or pull back by attacking your own creeps when they are half life & attacking the other hero so creeps aggro onto you.
Middle Game
You should be roaming now with other teammates, make sure you carry a TP in case your carry gets ganked and you have the potential to save them. While ganking shiled your initiator or whoever is going to be rushing in and likely taking damage, remember Cauterize does NOT need to be used to last hit heroes. Should you be rushing into a dangerous situation remember to manually activate flame consumption so you get healed as opposed to damaged.
Late Game
By late game you should be throwing out spells whenever they are cool downed, focus your shield on your carry hero or if someone gets caught up too aggressively shield them, you should not be farming at all by this point, you are better off getting gold & experience from the opposition heroes dying and your team pushing down towers. Kongor is always good since you can heal allies/shield them or tank yourself and use flame consumption to heal up all the damage you would otherwise take.

Spells

Flare
Gives sight in an AoE of 300 for 4 seconds as well as dealing 75/150/225/300 Magic damage to units and 25/50/75/100 to towers as well as slowing enemy units by 14/20/26/32%
Type – Magic
Range – 800
Radius – 300
Mana Cost – 120
Cooldown – 14 seconds
Good farming & harassing tool early as well as getting last hits on tower, great later on for chasing down heroes as well as keeping vision on an area for potential ganks & counter ganks.
===================================================================================================

Hollowpoint Shells
Gives a 25/30/35/40% chance for an attack to deal an additional 20/30/40/50 bonus physical damage as well as stunning the opponent for .05/.1/.2/.2 seconds
Great later game, it’s like Savage Mace almost without the true-strike ability and is such an annoying passive ability to go against.
===================================================================================================

Dead Eye
Gives an extra 60/120/180/240 attack range to Flint Beastwood
Ridiculous passive , at level 3 & 4 you can safely attack towers outside of their range, at level 4 Flint Beastwood has a range of 810, no one even comes close to hitting that range.
===================================================================================================

Money Shot
After 1.9s of channeling unleashes a massive shot that deals 355/505/665 damage and stuns for .2 seconds
Type – Superior Magic
Range – 1500/200/2500
Channeling Time – 1.9 seconds
Mana Cost – 175/275/375
Cooldown – 20/15/10 seconds

Item Recommendations
Geometers Bane is a great item, with 3 hard hitting images with 810 range late game is ridiculous, as well as hollowpoint shells working with your images. Obvious item is obvious.

Assassin’s Shroud gets an honorary nod because well, it is still useful on Sniper in order to escape ganks effectively forcing the other team to buy wards/dust/gem and if farmed quickly enough can really propel sniper in his ability to farm due to pushing lanes without worry of invisible detection.

Since you will be getting Geometer’s Bane the Firebrand in frostburn won’t stack, thus Frostwolf Skull is a great slowing item for Beastwood, giving him much needed stats in all 3 attributes as well as the ability to slow on attack.

The other orb effect recommended is Shieldbreaker, due to hollowpoint shells & sniper’s sneakiness with long range, Beastwood can literally drop a hero before they know what’s hit them and run off with this in his arsenal.

The fact that Thunderclaw/Charged Hammer isn’t an orb effect in HoN is a carry’s dream. Increases farm capability as well as adding huge attack speed allowing for more procs of hollowpoint shells.
===================================================================================================
Early Game
Beastwood ideally should solo middle, with his superior range to any hero with Dead Eye in combination with his superb attack animation, it makes Beastwood such a dominant lane controller. Obviously his focus early on is getting those last hits and farming, alternatively he can be used to push effectively with Flare doing 100 damage to towers at level 4 also being a great nuke/chase down ability.
Middle Game
By now you should be gank-farming or totally farming if your team is starting to break since Beastwood, like DotA’s sniper, can carry a team hard if farmed enough. However if your team hasn’t then towers should be pushed, Beastwood should be easily taking last hits on towers with Flare at level 4 doing 100 damage. Carry around TP scrolls since you can TP, line up a Money Shot for potential kills on heroes ganking your team and then farm that lane etc.
Late Game
By now you should be purely going around with your team for fights, utilize Beastwood’s range to your potential, he is not a hero that stands in the fray and can take a beating. Kongor is always effective at certain times with good vision, focus the other team’s carry or very effective team-fight heroes (Tempest, Hellbringer, Magmus etc.) but farming should almost ceast barring post-team fight and regardless a push should be attempted.
iFlee/Rice’s General Item Guide for HoN & DotA
Since I’ve received many messages about my item builds which I do not really put in the necessary core items that should require no thought to obtain I decided to make this guide in order to help some people look at situations and judge for themselves what to get. Please note that items are not solely dedicated to a certain group, for instance Shrunken Head/BKB while good on a carry hero is universally good, just more beneficial to a hero that needs to not be stunned/slowed to output DPS.
===================================================================================================
Carry Hero
This item section is meant for the heroes that have carry potential whether it be hard-semi or gank-carry categorized such as Swiftblade/Juggernaut, Soulstealer/Nevermore, Arachna/Drow Ranger etc. These items should be looked at seriously for any of the heroes categorized as carries however please consider in which order you purchase your items.

![]()
Shrunken Head (HoN) | Black King Bar (DotA)
This is probably a core item for any carry hero due to the fact that this item when activated, negates all spells that would otherwise be aimed at the hero with the exception of some ultimate spells. A Shrunken Head/BKB used at the proper time can turn the tides of a battle. The point of SH/BKB is to allow the carry hero to stand in the fray and dish out a huge amount of damage since they cannot be stunned/slowed by means of most spells so after obtaining this item most carry heroes gear for huge DPS items.

![]()
Geometer’s Bane (HoN) | Manta Style (DotA)
Pretty much a staple item since most carry heroes tend to be Agility based due to the + IAS/MS/All Stats & gives illusions which wreak havoc late game. The great thing about this item is that it has a split millisecond of invulnerability which can be used to dodge single target spells and turn around a fight. This item at the metagame phase while still an effective item isn’t the best DPS item available however due to the illusions the longer the game goes the higher the DPS capability of this item goes up. Remember that illusions do not benefit from +dmg items only from +stats.

![]()
Savage Mace (HoN) | Monkey King Bar (DotA)
A great counter to evasion heroes and also Wingbow/Eaglehorn with the True Strike ability which makes it impossible for your hero to miss. Also adds a % chance to deal 100 extra damage as well as adds a % chance to ministun. As you can see this item has a lot of sub-abilities to it and as such makes it an extremely good item for heroes who have a decent chunk of attack speed but really lack a huge amount of damage.

![]()
Shieldbreaker (HoN) | Stygian Desolater (DotA)
This item has an orb effect that lowers the enemy’s armor that you attack by 6 and does not stack with other orb effects. This orb effect has the hugest DPS output due to the negative armor it gets as well as the damage it has period. Usually gotten on carry heroes that can farm it early and then take out enemy heroes extremely fast with just a few auto-attacks. Usually this item is gotten in conjunction with Daemonic Breastplate/Assault Cuirass due to that items huge increment in attack speed and its -armor aura.

![]()
Whispering Helm (HoN) | Helm of the Dominator (DotA)
Probably the most bought orb effect which is lifeleech, this item adds so much more since it allows your hero to dominate a creep which for the most part is used to stack neutral creep camp as well as the ancient spawns. It’s fairly easy to get this early due to the fairly cheap components (900 Hungry Spirit/Mask of Death, 950 Helm of the Victim/Helm of Iron Will) allowing for heroes +gold/exp farm to increase a lot when the higher level neutral creep camps are stacked. Also can be upgraded into Symbol of Rage/Satanic which is the best leech in the game.

![]()
Charged Hammer (HoN) | Mjollnir (DotA)
While this item is geared more for the HoN carry since Charged Hammer is not considered an orb effect in HoN, it’s still an effective orb for DotA. The rest of this section will assume you are playing HoN since there’s not much more to say for DotA. The chain lightning proc is a huge plus for farming as well as teamfights and with the +attack speed that the item and its predecessor (Thunderclaw/Maelstorm) give allows you to utilize the +dmg and chain lightning proc.
===================================================================================================
Support Hero
This item section is meant for support heroes such as Glacius/Crystal Maiden, Plague Rider/Lich, Slither/Venomancer, Accursed/Abaddon. This item section for a reason does not have a huge list of high costing items because support heroes should not be farming a lot to begin with.

&
![]()
Courier & Flying Courier
One of the 3 necessary components to supporting your team, a courier can make or break the middle lane more than others due to lack of a sideshop to grab boots or any regeneration etc. Flying courier makes it that much better due to the fact that it is faster and can ship back and forth bottles that need to be refilled etc. If there isn’t a courier bought at the beginning (and shared) then you will most likely be hearing about it so just suck it up and buy the 200 gold courier.

&
![]()
Wards
Wards are EASILY the most important item that can be bought early to mid game and still have a huge effectiveness late game. Early/Meta game is all about map control which incidentally usually involves rune control and being able to see said runes is an exponential advantage to your middle lane to grab those runes/bottle it and make effective use of it by killing another hero possibly with the appropriate rune (Double Damage, Haste, Invisibility). However people are often counter warded with the use of the true-sight wards (Blue ones) which just shows you how much an emphasis on more vision of the map teams really jockey for.

![]()
Teleport
The last of 3 “must-haves” for support heroes that pay off huge dividends a teleport scroll is an item that while costing 135 gold has a huge payback if used properly. You can chase down enemies who may hide behind a tower a lot easier, run to where the tower cannot see you and teleport home, you can teleport to another lane and gank or set up defense etc. etc. You should ALWAYS be carrying a teleport around if you do not have Post-Haste/Boots of Travel which in most games will be all the time.

![]()
Astrolabe (HoN) | Mekansm (DotA)
This item is good in literally any situation, who doesn’t want to be healed? Not only does it increase your own heroes survivability it increases the survivability of your allies be creeps or heroes due to not only the heal but the fact it adds 2 armor to all units in the AoE, 2 armor may not seem like a lot but damage reduction is damage reduction and even a little bit helps at all times.

![]()
Barrier Idol (HoN) | Khadgar’s Pipe of Insight (DotA)
More situational if the other team has a huge amount of burst magic damage (Pyromancer/Lina, Witch Slayer/Lion, Thunderbringer/Zeus etc.) but really a good pickup overall since there will always be magic damage in a game regardless of the hero picks unless you manage to do (in DotA) ARSH and get Troll Warlord. Again used at the right moment can nullify a lot of burst magic damage and again, applies the magic shield in an AoE making it effective for the whole team.

![]()
Tablet of Command (HoN) | Force Staff (DotA)
An underrated item in both games to be honest, it can be used to push an enemy closer to your team when they aren’t expecting it, to juke out enemies by pushing you up cliffs, help chase by pushing you or a teammate, the possibilities are endless. The only minor issue with this item is that it does take a bit of intelligence of when to use it, for instance if you are chasing through the woods and get your pathing changed, you may regret using this item but overall this item is very, very hilarious to see/use and a decent underrated item overall.

Nomes Wisdom (HoN)
This item is exclusive to Heroes of Newerth but it is such a good item. When allies cast a spell they get healed based on the % of the manacost of the spell which really, who doesn’t want that? As well as it adds a minor mana regeneration of 1, which may not seem like a lot but then again it is like level 2 aura of Glacius/Crystal Maiden. Overall an extremely good item to pick up usually as Demented Shaman, Soul Reaper, Jereziah etc. basically any healer.
===================================================================================================
Gank/Roamer Hero
This item section is dedicated to those roamers who focus or may focus on roaming/ganking as their main point of xp/gold early/meta game such as Andromeda/Vengeful Spirit, Witch Slayer/Lion, Pyromancer/Lina, Magmus/Sand King.

![]()
Teleport
Since these kinds of heroes depend on kills more than last hitting creeps a teleport scroll is key to moving around the map with wards, teleporting to a lane and taking the long detour route to another lane may seem tedious but it may pay off due to lack of vision to that particular gank spot/better positioning overall but overall turning a 2v2/1v1 into a 3v2/2v1 should come out with favorable odds for your side (assuming you have the 3 or 2), key word being SHOULD. Always make sure your teammates are aware of your presence before progressing with your gank.

![]()
Bottle
This item will probably be bought by at least 8/10 of the heroes in the game because is it such a good versatile item, heals for 135 hp/75 mana over a short duration with 3 charges and allows you to bottle up runes to use at a later date, the reason why this is bought so much that with all the refills you will be doing over the game by fountain or runes this item will pay for itself tenfold as opposed to buying regen like Health Potions/Mana Pots.

![]()
Portal Key (HoN) | Kelen’s Dagger (DotA)
An item good in any heroes inventory, some more than others however no one can refute the logic that blink dagger is a great item. It can be used to help initiate for those heroes who have spells that are an AoE around themselves (Magmus/Sand King, Behemoth/Earthshaker, Kraken/Tidehunter etc.) or it can be used to blink away from incoming ganks or to juke out heroes. I have to say that this is probably THE best item in the game, but that’s just my personal opinion.

![]()
Codex (HoN) | Dagon (DotA)
While this item is rarely gotten, that’s more to the fact by the time it is gotten 400 damage isn’t the biggest source of DPS one could have gotten, however if bought early enough a level 1 Codex/Dagon can easily combo off heroes, thinking particularly of Pyromancer/Lina and Witch Slayer/Lion who already have burst nukes. However it is rarely upgraded past level 1 for a good reason, you should be looking to different items and leaving codex at level 1, the 100 dmg/minor mana cost/cd reduction isn’t worth the 1350 upgrade IMO at least.
===================================================================================================
From here on out it really depends on the hero’s main attribute and there’s a handful of items that I did or did not include, feel free to leave a comment with your opinion on item choices that you may have or on my item choices with some reasoning, remember that these items are not a MUST-buy for the most part (the only 2 real items I would classify as must-buy outside of TP/Wards/Courier would be Shrunken Head/BKB & Portal Key/Kelen’s Dagger) and are just my opinion of typical core items you would see watching a high tier HoN/DotA game.

HoN vs LoL vs DotA vs DotA 2.0 Part II
So why is League of Legends surpassing Heroes of Newerth as a replacement of DotA? It’s been widely criticized for it’s messy game design, it’s stupid japanophile graphics and overall just being a watered down content version of DotA that has totally been removed from the AoS style of game, which may not totally be a bad thing.
Could it be that LoL has Pendragon, a mastermind of a businessman that rivals even Hunter_ without the shadiness? I mean he still has the TDA forums up & running even though TDA exists no more but it makes him so much moolah it’s not funny at all. Does this have something to do with the $100,000 Season 1 prize money? The fact that it, for the moment at least, is Free to play? Another huge lure from the $$$ costing HoN? Lastly this impressive Season 1 trailer is so much eye candy but as a lot of people have pointed out, they are upset that Riot Games have spent time on making a video to attract new players as opposed to updating new content to keep the already playerbase.
Or is it that S2 games still has major issues with balancing? I mean we still have the same 5 heroes being picked/banned in EVERY competitive game and it seems you either ban or pick those heroes or your doom is neigh. Or it’s somewhat unstable servers? It’s been widely noted that the USW servers are horrendous even for some USW players, spiking from 200 to upwards of 800ms ping in a single match. Now don’t get me wrong, the gaming industry is a business but it does seem like S2 gaming is just a money grabbing scheme over and over. First of all the price to buy a HoN account is $30, to buy a sub-account (or AKA or Alternative account) is $20 and to reset your stats is another $20. That’s right people if you get shit on early in your HoN career and don’t want to shell out $20 to have another chance at people not kicking you from every game then you are pretty much S-C-R-E-W-E-D. What’s more they this past weekend let all the smurfing return for a one time weekend only (for now at least). All old pre-retail accounts were once again active and allowed to play to test HoN, why? So that players who didn’t pay will hopefully be enticed to buy HoN.
And what of DotA? The competitive scene has somewhat recently lost one of it’s most prominent names for ages to come, Merlini. New faces are emerging from Asia and the European teams are starting to pale in comparison of teamwork and skill. What this spells for DotA tournaments is yet to be seen but thus far they are holding strong. DotAcast I have to say is being run by a bunch of shmucks who throw out swear words like candy, very professional for what is suppose to be a very prominent e-Sports media company. And what of a new version? The versions take an absurdly long time to come out unless it’s a quick fix to a bug (usually resulting in a .b/.c version etc.) I mean I know firsthand how stupid the WC3 editor is but with rumors swirling of DotA 2.0 being worked on one question remains, is it time for Icefrog to hand over the reigns of DotA to someone who can focus 100% on WC3′s DotA?
Which brings me to DotA 2.0, not much news has surfaced since my last rant although there have been questions of release dates in which the president has stated “soon but we are not 100% set on a date”. Yeah OK you might as well have said fuck you we’ll release it when we want to. Perhaps the suggestions that DotA 2.0 is not Valve’s #1 project as some people had suggested and due to E3, I think we can all confirm that a slight bit. So again the usual questions arise, What is valve doing, what is icefrog doing, when will it be released, why am i a fat ugly pre-pubesc– oops that ones for Dr Phil. As of right now all I can tell you for sure is that … well nothing since LITERALLY no new news has arised since my last rant, either Valve is keeping a tight tight lid on things or there literally is nothing new to say.
AND AS ALWAYS
